100th Anniversary Logo Contest News for Your Units

Fellow Scouters:

A Once-In-A-Lifetime Chance:

One of your Scouts could work hand-in-hand with the renowned graphic artist and Eagle Scout Kit Hinrichs in his San Francisco studio!

The BSA 100th Anniversary Celebration Logo Contest is designed to inspire every Scout to be involved in a part of history. We need your help to encourage the Scouts in your area to pick up a crayon, a pen, a pencil, or a computer mouse and submit ideas!

This opportunity is especially exciting because the winner will fly to San Francisco and work with world-renowned graphic artist and Eagle Scout Kit Hinrichs to bring the winning logo idea to life! Mr. Hinrichs is known for his patriotic work involving American flag memorabilia, and several of his pieces are on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for one lucky Scout, so please help in spreading the word! All entries are due Nov. 30, 2007.

To recognize the outstanding efforts of our Scouts, in addition to the logo contest patch and participation certificate that every Scout entering the contest will receive, winners in each category will receive a $100 ScoutStuff.org gift card. The overall winner will receive a $250 ScoutStuff.org gift card.

Learn how to get Scouts in your area involved!

Entry forms, rules, and details can be found on the BSA 100th Anniversary Web site.

Tell other Scout leaders about the contest!

Spread the Word!

Dear Steve,

The Internet has affected our lives in many ways. We now have resources at our fingertips not available just a few short years ago. Scouting is making new and exciting resources available online to support your effort to offer the best program possible to the Scouts in your unit. Almost every day you will find new additions to the National Scouting websites. If you have been busy serving young people and haven't had a chance to take look, I've included links to some recent additions in this edition of ENews that I hope you will find interesting.

Leaders to be Recognized at Annual Recognition Dinner

The Heart of America Council is pleased to recognize the twenty-six individuals who have been selected as this year's Silver Beavers recipients. To see photos of this year's honorees or to register to attend the event, click on the link below to visit the Annual Recognition Dinner's webpage. The Silver Beaver is the highest honor that a council can bestow on a volunteer. This award honors the individual not only for their involvement in Scouting, but also their work outside of Scouting to make their community a better place for young people.

The awards will be presented at the Annual Recognition Dinner on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at the Kansas City Marriott Muehlebach. Reservations for the dinner are required at a price of $45 per person.

Boys' Life Online
Scouts in Action

Boys' Life is a great magazine for Scouts. It encourages them to stay active in our program in part by showing them exciting things they can do in the Scouting program. Since most young people spend time on the Internet, Boys' Life Magazine has followed them there. The Boys' Life website is not a site where they simple read the magazine articles online. This is an interactive site designed to give our Scouts a place that they can learn, play games, read comments place by other Scouts and feel a part of a larger community of young people. The site is geared for all ages. Cub Scouts also have a place of their own called Cub Corner.

Scouts can submit their favorite jokes or Scouting photos. They can vote and comment on the submissions. "Scouts in Action" is a new audio segment in which Scouts tell their own story. This month's story is about how John Guyton reacted while riding in the passenger seat of a truck when the driver suffered a seizure in the middle of rush hour traffic. Be sure to take some time to check it out and better yet, encourage your Scouts to visit.

Scouting Magazine Online

Scouting Magazine also has a website providing oline resources for all Scouting families. You can also submit your advice for the Front Line Stuff section of Scouting Magazine. You can suggest questions to be considered.

One great feature on the website is a search option that allows you to look for information on a particular topic back through the 1998 issues of the magazine. There goes that excuse for hanging on to all those back issues!

2007 Eagle Scout Fellowship
Gathering Scheduled for Late November
Eagle Award

Last year more than 110 Eagles attended the inaugural Eagle Scout Fellowship held at the Liberty Memorial. The event proved to be one of the most memorable event held for Eagle Scouts in the Heart of America Council. The Fellowship is a great way for Eagle Scouts over the age of 25 to reconnect with fellow Eagles at a business after-hours event.

The 2007 Eagle Fellowship will be held on November 29, 2007. Plan to enjoy memorable fellowship, light hors d'oeuvres, and the Plaza lights at the Polsinelli law firm at 700 West 47th Street, Suite 1000, Kansas City, Missouri. You can register online.

ScoutParents Have their own Website too!

Do you want to encourage parents unable to be involved as leaders to play an active role in their child's Scouting adventure? Then the ScoutParents website might just be the place for you (and those parents). A ScoutParent is a parent or adult mentor of a Scout who enthusiastically participates with their Scout and also helps other volunteers to provide the best quality program experience to all youth in every unit. The site provides information for parents, a discussion forum, Scouting basics, and a downloadable Parents Orientation Guide.

Fieldbook Companion Website

When you were young, did you erect towers in you backyard to see if it could be done? Did you build a conical raft just to see if it would actually float? If so you are probably like me and find the Boy Scout Fieldbook an exciting adventure in itself. If you are looking for more resources to continue your arm chair, or real life adventures or to plan the next troop or crew high adventure activity be sure to check out the Fieldbook's companion website. This site is filled with resources to learn more about almost every subject covered between the covers of this comprehensive guidebook. If you are looking for more information on everything from sailing to bicycling to leadership and trek preparation this is the place for you.

Units to be Recognized for 100% Boys' Life Subscriptions
Being a 100% Boy Life Units has its Rewards!
Boy Life Mag

Is your unit a 100% Boys' Life unit? A quick call to our council registrar, Liz Honeycutt or your district executive to check might be worth the effort. The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America understands the importance of Boys' Life. Studies have shown that Scouts receiving Boys' Life stay in Scouting longer. The National Council is offering an exclusive drawing for all of the 100% Boys' Life units! On November 30, 2007, all 100% Boys' Life units will be automatically entered to win one of twelve (three for each of the four regions) amazing prize packages!

Each prize package includes a $500 Bass Pro Shops gift card, 20 Eagle Claw Pack-It Rod & Reel Combos and an announcement of their unit in the May-June 2008 issue of Scouting magazine.
