Troop 42: October Activity night

Activity night

Tonight is an Activity Night to be held at the church. There is no cost for this activity. The details will be explained tonight but given the time of year, one could get an idea of the theme.
We will also present information regarding the November Campout at Smithville Lake, the Merit Badge Academy in March and will see if there is interest in Philmont 2009. Registration for that draw is this week.

Brock Meets Governer Blunt

Our own Brock Martin met with Governor Matt Blunt in downtown Kansas City last Friday, October 19 to explain to the Governor how the Missouri Virtual Instruction Program works.

Brock was one of four area students enrolled in the program that met with the Governor. For more on Brock's meeting with the Governor check out Lee's Summit Journals, article Blunt seeks to expand virtual school program.

Brock said he enjoys the program because by taking some high school courses online, he has more time during the school day for other activities.

"I kind of wanted a little more free time in my school day to (be a classroom aide) for a teacher or help out in the office and not just be in school taking classes all day," he said.

Martin, who is taking a personal finance course through MoVIP this semester, said he does his online course work at home either in the evenings after school or on the weekends. He said taking classes at home rather than at school makes it easier to concentrate.

"Usually when I come home, I'll get started on MoVIP, knock out that day's assignment, then get started on my other school work," he said. "I find it easier because I don't have the other students around to distract me."

Martin said he met with Blunt for about three minutes during last week's conference, adding "I think he was pretty impressed with the technology." According to Blunt's Web site, the governor was more than impressed.

In a statement released on Friday, Blunt announced that he is recommending to the state legislature a $1 million increase for MoVIP, bringing the total funding for the program to $6.2 million.
Way to go Brock...

Troop 42 Meeting Monday 10/15

Due to the heavy rain Saturday, we have a lot of clean up to do. Both trailers need attention. Therefore, as was announced at the campout, we will be meeting at 6:00 pm Monday night. ALL members of Troop 42 are expected to attend and bring some old towels or rags.
We have a lot invested in equipment that each of us use at one time or another. It is the responsibility of each troop member to care for it.
Also, a $40 deposit for Scout Camp 2008 is due now. The dates for camp will be confirmed this week. If you did not do so last week, see Mr. Walker to make that payment.
Let me know if you have any questions.
